مرّ ليلي ذاك حالي وأنا
Amid sleeplessness, torment, and languor,
Between longing and torment and yearning
My night passed—such was my plight—while I
My night passed as such was my state
أسألI ask الأنجمthe stars عنabout حالthe condition المنىhopes
أسأل الأنجم عن حال المنى
ياO حبيبيmy beloved كيفhow صارتthey have become بينناbetween us
يا حبيبي كيف صارت بيننا
Asked the stars how hopes were faring.
I ask the stars about the state of the beloved
O my beloved, what has become of them between us?
Oh my love how did it become between us
كيفhow أمسىhas become ياO حبيبيmy beloved عهدناour pledge
كيف أمسى يا حبيبي عهدنا
بعدafter ماthat طابgrew sweet هواناour love ودناand drew near

After our love grew sweet, and nearer came
After our love and closeness became pleasant
كلُّall ماthat which كانwas بعيداًdistant ورناand gazed
كلُّ ما كان بعيداً ورنا
كلُّevery نجمٍstar منfrom سماواتthe heavens السناradiance
كلُّ نجمٍ من سماوات السنا
All that had been distant, and gazed
Everything that was once distant became intimate
Every star from the heavens of radiance?
Every star in the heavens of splendor
آهah لوif only ينظرit sees حاليmy plight الآنnow آهah
آه لو ينظر حالي الآن آه
حينماwhen ضاقتgrew narrow بآلاميwith my pains الحياهlife
حينما ضاقت بآلامي الحياه
Ah, if only it could see my plight now—ah—
Oh, if only my state now could be seen, oh
When life has grown narrow with my pains,
When life became too narrow for my pain
ندمwould regret النجمُthe star علىover غاليprecious سناهits radiance
ندم النجمُ على غالي سناه

ورأى كيف انطوينا فطواه
The star would regret its precious radiance,
The star regretted its long brilliance
And see how we have folded inward, then fold that light away.
