Whose are the eyes sunken in reverence?

Whose are the eyes that have grown clear as a spring,

And been crowned with purity, radiant in its glow,

And revealed to us beauty’s sublime meaning?

Wait, maiden of the convent! And beauty, which

The hearts of all humankind yearn for—

Beauty is humankind’s right, yet you have carried it

    Hidden, aloof, forbidden.

Its dwelling is in the convent, and beneath the wing of darkness,

Martyred beauty flows down as tears.

O comforter of the world, I would ransom you in your desolation,

You are stirred by longing, or feel your ribs constrict.

The world burns with longing for you, and perhaps

You have kindled yourself as candles in the dark.
