She returned to her bird, who had sung to her,

And warbled, stirring her longing and grieving her.

What fortune brought her back to her faithful companion,

And the confidant of her solitude, and companion of her youth?

Aflame with yearning, she conceals her fire

In vain, and refuses to let its blaze appear.

    نارُ الحنينِ دفينُهَا أفشاهَا

    O my long-sought companion, your secret is widely known;

Longing's fire—what lay buried within it has revealed it.

Why ask? Do these not tell you—a sweeping torrent

Of my passion, which passed all bounds and reached its utmost,

And the tears of poems whose lament you stirred?

And your beauty is the inspiration that dictated them.

What can the watchers do against a love that has overflowed,

And a longing gone mad, whose reason is lost?

And radiant spring departed, no longer visiting them.

What lies in the gardens? Gloom upon their earth,

And a cloud veiling the clarity of their sky.

The doves of their thickets fell still, and it was I

Who shared my sorrow with them, so their eyes brimmed.

My anguish for them! Where are the east wind's sighs,

And the pools' answering laments among their hills?

Silence swept over them until nothing remained

Except my thwarted cry and its echo.

What did we find in a fleeting encounter,

And an evening like lightning, whose morning was at hand?

Alas for those seconds! They did not pause

So we might savor the happiness we had tasted,

So that a doubter might, with certainty, delight

His eyes in a vision whose radiance slips away.

And the violence of its tumult, and the slash of its knives.

My eyes and thoughts have not drunk their fill of you,

And I returned to kindle a heart and lips.

What can imminent closeness do for a heart

Whose thirst the whole of time cannot quench?

What recourse have hopes with an adored woman

At whose dwelling I have made my eyelids sore,

Except remembrance, which is wearying sustenance?

What nourishment can her memory give my thoughts?

I spent my dreams embracing her image,
