والمصلّين صباحاً ومساء
This is the Kaaba around which we once circled,
This Kaaba—we used to circle it,
praying there morning and evening.
And pray, morning and evening.
كمhow often سجدناwe prostrated ourselves وعبدناand worshipped الحسنbeauty فيهاwithin it
كم سجدنا وعبدنا الحسن فيها
كيفhow باللهby God رجعناwe returned غرباءas strangers

How often we prostrated ourselves and worshiped beauty within it—
How often we prostrated ourselves and worshipped beauty within it!
how, by God, have we returned as strangers?
How, by God, did we return as strangers?

House of my dreams and my love, you greeted us
The home of my dreams and love greeted us
with the cold reserve accorded a newcomer.
With cold indifference, as it would a newcomer.

You failed to recognize us, though once, whenever you saw us,
It did not recognize us, though once, whenever it saw us,
the light would smile upon us from afar.
Light would smile at us from afar.

My heart thrashed at my side like a slaughtered creature,
My heart fluttered in my breast like a creature being slaughtered,
and I cried, “O heart, be still.”
While I cried, 'O heart, be calm!'

Wailing like the desert winds.

How sorely we passed the night in hardship—and you too!

Where is your gathering place, and where the evening talk?
Where are your people, openhearted, and your boon companions?
Where are your people, merry boon companions?

Tears leapt to my eye and clouded it.

وسرت أنفاسه في جوِّهِ
Ennui has settled in beauty’s abode,
Beauty's home—tedium settled within it,
and its breath has spread throughout the air.
And its breaths spread through that home's air.

Night has knelt there and crouched low,
And night knelt there and crouched,
and its specters roam the hall.
And its ghosts ran through the hall.

And decay—I saw it with my own eyes,
its two hands weaving the spider’s web.
And its two hands were weaving a spider's web.

God knows, the road has indeed been long,
and I have come to you so that I might rest.
And I have come to you to rest.

Within you, God has held my estrangement at bay,
In you, God lifted my exile from me,
and my traveling gear has come to rest upon the soil of home.
And my saddle came to rest on my homeland's soil.

Forever banished in the world of my misery.
فإذاso if عدتI return فللنجوىthen for private communion أعودI return
فإذا عدت فللنجوى أعود
ثمthen أمضيI depart بعدafter ماthat أفرغI drain كأسيmy cup
ثم أمضي بعد ما أفرغ كأسي
If I return, it is for intimate converse that I return;
So if I return, I return to confide,
then I depart, once I have emptied my cup.
Then I depart, once I have drained my cup.
