وانتحينا معا مكاناً قصياً

Together we withdrew to a secluded place,

And we withdrew together to a remote place,

passing our conversation back and forth.

Exchanging words, taking and giving them back.

سألتني مللتنا أم تبدلتَ سوا

نا هوىً عنيفاً ووجدا

She asked me, “Have you tired of us, or turned to someone other than—

in yearning for your sanctuary, and in sleeplessness;

وقصيداً مجلجلاً كل بيت

خلفه ألف عاصف ليس يهدا

and in a resounding poem, every verse

with a thousand raging winds behind it that never subside.

ذاك عهدي لكل قلبكم لم يق

ضِ ديون الهوى ولم يرع عهدا

That is my pledge to you: how often the heart has failed—

That is my pledge to your whole heart; it has not re-
