A lost hope, and a mind cast adrift,

Between a love that tyrannized and a wound that rebelled.

And a delusion toward which the nights advanced,

Rending its veil until it stood bare.

And it appeared pale as a slain day

That had scarcely kissed the rosy morning.

May God forgive those nights their illusion,

That pictured spring for me while the garden was bare.

The gray dove shared the sorrows of my heart,

And its anguish, and sang whenever my heart sang.

Then she departed, the heart like a bloodied string,

Orphaned in its tears, its melody solitary.

What use is living on, as I see my extinction advancing,

And my end in a form ever renewed?

And my lament—what use is my lament

    For hapless wishes that scatter?

In vain I gather what was lost of them,

While death lies in wait for me and them.

And my living on, weeping over a worn-out hope,

And bending tenderly over a wounded one on a pillow?

And my scheming for sleep, while in my eyelids

Are thornbushes, and my bed is made of thorns?

And my complaint to the darkness, which, like me,

Has lost its dawn, astray and sleepless?

And my staring up toward heaven,

And my calling there to every star?

The days have bereaved me of it; nothing remains

On earth that delights and merits praise.

They carried off the beautiful and the splendidly majestic,

And swept away all that was sacred and glorified.

A pillar of heaven leaned, and now

Every smooth-built palace stood loosely woven.

Lord, pardon my bewilderment and doubt,

And a question that echoes within my breast.

It is misery's whisper, not doubt,

No, nor rebellion—Your justice is more enduring.

Where, O Lord, where, before my appointed hour,

May I meet, just once, my sole burden?

A close friend whom no tale-bearer's guile turned away,

    Nor slanderers or the envious swayed;

And a beloved who, when my feeling overflows,

    Repays me with a tide that never runs dry;

And an embrace I feel within my ribs,

Surging through my blood like a foaming sea.
