وماذاand what تريدينyou want أنto أكتباI write
You asked me to write, O my paradise;
You asked me to write, O my paradise.
and what would you have me write?
And what would you have me write?

وقلبكand your heart يعلمknows ماwhat غيباwas concealed
Nothing within my breast is hidden from you,
And nothing within my breast is hidden from you,
and your heart knows all that has been kept unseen.
And your heart knows what was concealed.
سأكتبI shall write أنكthat you أنتyou yourself الربيعspring
وأنكand that you أنضرfreshest ماwhat فيon الربىthe hills
I shall write that you are spring itself,
I shall write that you yourself are spring,
and that you are the freshest thing upon the hills;
And that you are the freshest of all upon the hills,
وأنكand that you أنتyou yourself الجمالbeauty الفريدpeerless
وفجرand the dawn of الشبابyouth وحلمand the dream of الصباchildhood
that you are beauty, one of a kind,
And that you yourself are peerless beauty,
the dawn of youth and the dream of youth.
And youth's dawn and childhood's dream.

At morning I joyfully hail your name,
I exult in your name at dawn,
and fold sunset closed upon remembrance of you.
And fold the dusk around your memory.

Alas for the life that remains to me:
Alas for what remains of my life!
this is the darkness beneath my eyes,
Here is darkness beneath my eyes;

and this the whiteness of gray hair—how strange!—
Here is the whiteness of gray hair—oh, how I marvel
a sunset dressed in the guise of sunrise.
At a sunset in the garb of sunrise!

Woe to me for a riotous cup,
and for blood spilled into the cup;
And for blood spilled in the cup,

And for a deceptive mirage, and for
a dazzling radiance, glittering in its flashes.
What gleams in flashes, dazzling bright.

Time passed it around among a company;
Time bore it round among a company of men
they swayed, heads and necks inclining.
Who swayed with heads and necks bowed.

ماتdied الندامىthe drinking companions أيهاO الساقيcupbearer
They were struck down while you thought them drunk.
They were felled, yet you think them drunk.
The boon companions are dead, O cupbearer.
The drinking companions are dead, O cupbearer!

O Time, I never complained of weariness, nor
O Time, I did not complain of weariness, nor
did Time’s calamities ever manage to exhaust me.
Did time's calamities have the power to exhaust me.
عذبتI tormented أياميmy days بعفتهاwith their chastity
وقتلتهاand I killed them بصفاءwith the purity of أخلاقيmy character
I tormented my days by keeping them chaste,
I tormented my days with their chastity,
and killed them with the purity of my character.
And killed them with the purity of my character.
ياOh كمhow much غرستI planted وكمand how much سقيتI watered وكمand how many
نضرتI made flourish منof زهرflowers وأوراقand leaves
Oh, how much I planted, how much I watered, how often
Oh, how much I planted, how much I watered, and how many
I gazed upon blossoms and leaves!
Flowers and leaves I made flourish!
ماwhat حيلتيmy recourse والأرضwhile the earth مجدبةbarren
سيانalike إقلاليmy scant giving وإغداقيand my lavish giving
What recourse have I when the earth is barren?
What recourse have I, when the earth is barren?
My scant giving and my lavish pouring are alike.
My scant giving and my lavish giving are alike.
أينwhere الذينthose whom رفعتI raised فانحدرواthen they fell
وبنيتهمand I built them up بنيانthe building of خلاقa master creator
Where are those I raised, who then sank down,
Where are those I raised, who then fell,
those whom I built into edifices of character?
And whom I built up as a master creator builds?
إنindeed الوفاءloyalty بضاعةa commodity كسدَتhas become unsaleable
ومآلand the fate of صاحبهاits owner لإملاقto destitution
Fidelity is merchandise that has gone unsold,
Indeed, loyalty is a commodity that no longer sells,
and its possessor’s end is destitution.
And its owner's fate is destitution.
إنif كنتI was لمdid not أغنمI gain فقدthen indeed ظفرواthey won
منيfrom me بمغفرتيwith my forgiveness وإشفاقيand my compassion
Though I gained nothing, they surely prevailed:
If I gained nothing, they have won
from me they won forgiveness and compassion.
From me my forgiveness and compassion.
لكننيbut I والجرحwhile the wound يُلهبinflames ليfor me
حسيmy senses ويكويand sears كَيa searing إحراقburning
But I—though the wound pains me—
But I—while the wound inflames
enough; the cautery of my burning sears.
My senses and sears them with a scorching burn—

ووفيتُand I kept faith لمdid not أعبثI trifle بميثاقيwith my pledge
Impossible that I should forget they acted wantonly,
Can never forget that they trifled,
while I kept faith and never trifled with my covenant.
While I kept faith and never trifled with my pledge.
