1. إن تجد يا قلبُ قلباً قد لَهَا

    عن حبيبٍ مات فيه وَلَها

    If you find, O heart, a heart that has turned away

    from a beloved in whom it died, for whom it was mad with love—

  2. رُبَّ شمسٍ منحتنَا ظلَّهَا

    وتخلَّت غفرَ الله لَهَا

    Many a sun has granted us her shade,

    then forsaken us—may God forgive her.

  3. ذنبُ من يهواكَ أو ذنبُ السنين

    ذلكَ الهجرُ ولا لومَ عليك

    The fault of one who loves you—or the fault of the years—

    is that desertion; no blame is yours.

  4. أذنَبَت ساعة نجوى وحنين

    وسدت راحتَهُ في راحتيك

    An hour of whispered communion and longing sinned,

    and pillowed his palm within your two palms.

  5. آهِ لو تعرفُ يوماً ألمي

    مستطاراً تأكلُ النارُ ضلوعي

    Ah, if only one day you knew my pain:

    frantic, as fire devours my ribs;

  6. أو شريداً يلفحُ القَفرُ دمي

    أو طريداً تشربُ الريحُ دموعي

    or wandering, as the wasteland sears my blood;

    or hunted, as the wind drinks my tears.

  7. يا حبيبي غامَتِ اليومَ السماء

    وعلى الأُفقِ جهامٌ من بعيد

    My beloved, today the sky has clouded over,

    and on the horizon a rainless cloud looms from afar.

  8. كلّما أطمعُ في يومِ صفاء

    عَصَفَ العاصفُ عندي من جديد

    Whenever I hope for a day of serenity,

    the tempest rages around me anew.
