How strange—a heart whose wing you broke,

And through it ran remorse's blade, slaying.

And death went creeping through it; yet if there stirred

A memory of you, it flew to you on wings.

My sorrow for the bell within my breast,

And for the remnants of a temple beyond repair.

No difference between its moaning and its ringing,

And its echo is clearer in the valley of death.

O heart, love's tawny wine and its carpet,

And its cups, answering one another, ringing loud,

Are reserved for those who wander at whim,

Seeking such of its pleasures as come their way,

    Changing tables and beloveds:

If one love fails, another succeeds.

For love's healer follows its sufferer

Among them, and its balm lies on whatever it wounds.

O heart, alas for our constancy—what has it reaped?

Do you think a ray can be glimpsed in what remains?

O love, whose temple is hallowed,

One of your worshippers, chanting praise, has tasted death.

His sacrifices have multiplied, and long has been his vigil,

And his fasting—when, then, will you grant your favor?

O spreading tree of souls, beneath which is praised

The shade, and whose unfolding flowers are worshipped,

Do your shade and care reach one who trifles

With your manifest majesty, and another who jests,

While one slain by longing spends the night denied it,

Who spent his life aspiring to your shade?

Layla, I loved you like life itself, and tasted in

Your gathering a cup brimming with hopes.

Then the goblet of hopes shattered, and I came back

Reeling from love's sickness and its wasting.

The curtain fell on the play, and there ended

Those acts, and that theater was cleared.
