To the one whose feet trod the highest heavens
The loftiest praise, salutations, and acclaim.
I send praise, greetings, and eulogy

My brother, advisor, and he who repels harm from himself
To gain what he has encountered—may God gladden him!
Seeking what pleased his Lord

To him from distant passion comes a greeting

And how can I endure, when distance has destroyed my endurance?
How can I show patience when separation destroys me

My brother, the nights have betrayed us with their treachery

May Allah curse this spiteful age

To Allah I complain of the blows of fate
My heart with parting's arrow—how piercing it was!
When it pierced my heart with the arrows of separation

I have become, from the tyranny of time
A snakebitten man made to drink venom by his viper's fangs.
Like one given poison by snake's fangs

And isolated me from the one whose name
By the tongue of my wishes, answered it at once.
My yearning tongue calls out instantly

So how can I have patience with one dwelling in my chest?

In which, during sleep, the bird of his dream sent it flying.
When the bird of my dream circled around the meadows

So that beneath its blow, only the right hand fell.
And none fell but its right side

When the era bites us with its molars
Into us, checks it through ordained victory.
The destined victory will restrain it

No honour, by Allah, for those who oppose Him

Show kindness to the one whom time has abused
In it lies life for the young man tormented by separation.
With a cloak to give life to the youth pining from separation
