إنif رمتyou sought لهfor him وصلاًunion نقراhe pecked
O my heart, how you love torment!
O my heart, how you love a timid one!
If you seek union with him, he recoils;
If you seek union with him, he pecks at you.

He withheld himself, and thereby wasted my body away,
He has withheld himself and wasted my body,
And visited only to afflict me with sleeplessness.
And he visited, paining me with sleeplessness.

ماnot السمعhearing كمننunclear; apparently 'like one who' بالعينwith the eye يرىsees
If only you could behold his forelock—
If you could behold his forelock—
Hearing is not like seeing with one’s own eyes.
Hearing is not like seeing with the eye.

I never thought that daybreak
I had not thought that the mornings
Could turn desire aside when tresses meet the eye;
Would keep desire away—you see forelocks [wording unclear].
ويزيدand increases الصبthe lovesick lover أسىsorrow وشجىand anguish
دمعtears منfrom ذوبmelting القلبthe heart جرىflowed
Yet the lover’s sorrow and anguish deepen with
And the lovesick one's sorrow and anguish are deepened
Tears flowing from the heart’s molten core.
By tears that flowed from the melting heart.

يصبواyearn العشاقthe lovers لهfor it سحراbefore dawn
So I wander, lovestruck, whenever a zephyr passes—
So I wander lovesick whenever an east breeze passes,
The breeze for which lovers yearn before dawn.
For which lovers yearn in the hour before dawn.

برقlightning منfrom نحوthe direction of الخيفal-Khayf سرىtraveled by night
It stirs the heart to longing—and no wonder:
And the heart is stirred to longing—no wonder—
A flash of lightning traveled by night from the quarter of al-Khayf,
By lightning traveling by night from the direction of al-Khayf.
يوليhe grants الواديthe valley خصباًfertility سفراwhile traveling
ويزينand he adorns الناديthe gathering إذاwhen حضراhe was present
Bestowing fertility on the valley at dawn,
He grants the valley fertility on his travels,
And adorning the gathering whenever it appeared.
And adorns the gathering when he is present.

And when the goblet comes into view, it reveals to you
And when the goblet appears, he shows you
A lip like dawn when it breaks into light.
A lip like dawn when it breaks.
