As though calamities probe the cells,

Searching for the peerless one of the age,

إلى أن أناخت برغمي الركاب

إلى أن أناخت برغمي الركاب

بجنب عميد الهدى المؤتمن

بجنب عميد الهدى المؤتمن

Until, against my will, they made the riding camels kneel

Beside the trusted leader of guidance—

هو الحسن إسماً ومعنىً ومن

هو الحسن إسماً ومعنىً ومن

غدا أجود الخلق كفاً ومن

غدا أجود الخلق كفاً ومن

He is al-Ḥasan in name and meaning, and he who

Became the most generous of all creation in hand and [bounty]—

بحامي الذمار برب الفخار

بحامي الذمار برب الفخار

بشم النهار ببدر الدجن

بشم النهار ببدر الدجن

By the defender of honor, by the lord of glory,

By the [sun] of day, by the full moon in the gloom.

فلا تركنن لسلم الليالي

فلا تركنن لسلم الليالي

فقد ضل من لليالي ركن

فقد ضل من لليالي ركن

So never trust the peace of the nights,

For whoever relied on the nights has gone astray.

ولا تأمنن صروف الزمان

ولا تأمنن صروف الزمان

فشيمته الغدر فيمن أمن

فشيمته الغدر فيمن أمن

And never trust the vicissitudes of time,

For its nature is treachery toward whoever feels secure.

فيا لرزاياً أذبن الفؤاد

فيا لرزاياً أذبن الفؤاد

فكم غارةٍ في البرايا تشن

فكم غارةٍ في البرايا تشن

And oh, the calamities that melted the heart!

For how many raids they launch among humankind!

رواسي ابن معصومٍ في وقعها

رواسي ابن معصومٍ في وقعها

فأرخ وهو الخطيب اللسن

فأرخ وهو الخطيب اللسن

Ibn Maʿṣūm’s steadfast mountains, amid its impact [wording unclear];

So he recorded the date—he, the eloquent orator:

فجعنا بفقد الحسين كما

فجعنا بفقد الحسين كما

فجعنا بفقد الإمام الحسن

فجعنا بفقد الإمام الحسن

We were stricken by the loss of al-Ḥusayn, just as

We were stricken by the loss of Imam al-Ḥasan.
