قدalready شابَturned gray رأسيmy head ورأسُand the head of الحرصgreed لمhas not يشبturned gray
إنindeed الحريصthe eager one علىfor الدنياthe world لفيis surely in تعبtoil
My head has turned gray, but the head of greed has not.
The one who craves this world is surely weary.
ماwhat is ليwith me أرانيI see myself إذاwhen طالبتI sought مرتبةًa rank
فنلتهاand attained it طمحتaspired عينيmy eyes إلىto رتبranks
Why do I find that whenever I seek a rank
and attain it, my eyes aspire to higher ranks?
قدindeed ينبغيit befits ليme معwith ماwhat حزتI acquired منof أدبٍlearning
أنthat لاnot أخوضَI should enter فيinto أمرٍa matter ينقصthat diminishes بيme
With the learning I have acquired, I ought
not to enter into anything that diminishes me.
لوif كانit were يصدقنيtruthful to me دهريmy time بفكرتهthrough its insight
ماwould not اشتدgrow intense غميmy grief علىover الدنياthe world ولاnor نصبيmy toil
If time spoke truthfully to me through what it reveals,
my grief over this world and my toil would not be so great.
أسعىI strive وأجهدُand I exert myself فيماfor what لستI do not أدركهُattain
والموتُwhile death يكدحُwears away فيin زنديmy forearm وفيand in عصبيmy sinews
I strive and exhaust myself for what I cannot attain,
while death wears away my limbs and sinews.
باللهby God ربكyour Lord كمhow many بيتٍa house مررتyou passed بهby it
قدindeed كانit was يغمرُoverflowing باللذاتwith pleasures والطربِand merriment
By God, how many houses have you passed
that once overflowed with pleasures and merriment?
طارتswept عبابُthe surging tides of المناياdeaths فيthrough جوانبهits sides
فصارَand it became منfrom بعدهاafter that للويلa place of woe والحربِand strife
The surging tides of death swept through their rooms,
and afterward they became places of woe and strife.
فامسكso hold عنانكَyour reins لاdo not تجمعgather بهwith them طلعٌpalm blossoms
فلاfor not وعينكَby your eyes ماare الأرزاقُlivelihoods بالطلبِthrough seeking
So rein yourself in; no palm blossoms are gathered with your reins.
By your eyes, provision does not come simply through seeking.
قدmay يرزقُreceive provision العبدُthe servant لمwithout يتعبtiring رواحلهُhis mounts
ويحرمand be denied الرزقَprovision منone who لمhas not يوفَfallen short منin طلبِseeking
A servant may receive provision without tiring his mounts,
while one who has spared no effort in seeking may be denied it.
معalthough أننيI واجدٌfind فيamong الناسpeople واحدةًone thing
الرزقُprovision والنولُand gifts مقرونانِare joined فيin سببِa cause
Yet I find one thing among people:
provision and gifts are bound together by a cause.
وخطةًand a condition ليسَthere is not فيهاin it منany بيانِsign of غنىًwealth
الرزقُprovision أروعُis most troubling شيءٍa thing عنfor ذويpeople of الأدبِlearning
And there is a condition with no clear sign of wealth:
provision is a most troubling matter for people of learning.
ياO ثاقبَkeen one الفهمِof understanding كمhow many أبصرتَyou have seen ذاa person of حمقٍfolly
الرزقُprovision أعرىis barer بهwith him منthan لازمِone beset by الجربِmange
You of keen understanding, how many fools have you seen
beside whom a learned person is barer of provision than one beset by mange?
