Death has indeed granted you respite, ʿAtāhī,

yet death is never heedless, while your heart is heedless.

Alas for this frail mortal! Is there no

turning from his waywardness before death?

You are absorbed in this world, weeping for it and

lamenting it, while heedless of the Resurrection.

    والدارُ دارُ تفاخرٍ وتباه

    Life is sweet, and death is bitter;

and this abode is an abode of boasting and vainglory.

So give yourself an occupation apart from it, and do not

feign ignorance for its sake, for you are shrewd.

Do not delight in being called an eloquent speaker,

fine in eloquence, or great in influence.

Correct the corruption in your inner self, which

you toy with, and fear standing before God.

Asceticism in a contentious man who denies

the Resurrection is nothing but error and folly.

And I judge the utterance unsound, even if

you profess something other than the prayerful man's words.

Indeed, I have seen you making a show of asceticism,

for which we need matching examples from you.

If wearing wool is your proof by which

you invoke salvation, then I warn you against it.

    The clothing you wear, if

your inner self has strayed, is nothing but a flimsy rope.

Nothing is accepted from you except that by which

the utterances of mouths have passed judgment upon you.

And you still have ample latitude—woe to you—

so long as you do not equate our God with other gods.
