وكأسٍand a cup منfrom اللَّيلthe night مَخلُوقَةfashioned
وكأسٍ من اللَّيل مَخلُوقَة
تَبدَّتappeared منof التِّبرunworked gold فيهاwithin it نُجومstars
تَبدَّت من التِّبر فيها نُجوم
And a cup fashioned from night;
A cup made of the night appeared,
Stars of gold appeared within it.
Stars within it shone from amber clear,
تضمَّنَcontained باطِنُهاits interior قَهوَةًwine
تضمَّنَ باطِنُها قَهوَةً
إذاwhen مَردَrebelled الهمُّsorrow فضَّتburst forth رُجومmissiles
إذا مَردَ الهمُّ فضَّت رُجوم
Its interior held wine;
Its depths with coffee were imbued,
When sorrow rebelled, missiles burst forth.
When cares would come, their darts it speared.
