من لم يؤدبه والداه
أدبهdisciplined him الليلthe night والنهارُand the day
أدبه الليل والنهارُ
Whoever has not been disciplined by his parents
He whom his parents did not discipline
is disciplined by night and day.
Was disciplined by day and night
كمhow many قدindeed أذلاthey both humbled كريمَa nobleman قومٍof a people
كم قد أذلا كريمَ قومٍ
ليسthere is no لهfor him منهماagainst either of them انتصارvictory
ليس له منهما انتصار
How many a nobleman among his people they have humbled,
How many a noble soul of a people
with no victory for him over either of them.
With no help from them is degraded
منwho ذاthis one يدthe hand of الدهرtime لمnot تنلهُtouch him
من ذا يد الدهر لم تنلهُ
أوor اطمأنتremained secure بهfor him الديارُthe dwellings
أو اطمأنت به الديارُ
Who is there whom the hand of time has not touched,
Who is there whom time's hand did not touch
or whose dwellings have remained secure?
Or with whom the world was not tranquil
كلeveryone عنfrom الحادثاتcalamities مغضٍaverting his eyes
كل عن الحادثات مغضٍ
وعندهand he has للزمانagainst time ثارُa claim for vengeance
وعنده للزمان ثارُ
Everyone averts his eyes from calamities,
All are angered at vicissitudes
yet each has a claim for vengeance against time.
And for them time's vengeance endures
