منof الثناءِpraise ائتلافَjoining الدرpearls فيin النظمِstringing
I mean you, O best of those addressed with well-knit
I mean you, O best of those who are meant with harmony
praise, joined together as pearls are strung.
Of praise, the pearl necklace in poetry
أثنيI praise عليكَyou بماfor what جددتَyou bestowed anew منof نعمfavors
وماand not شكرتكI have thanked you إنif لمnot أثنِI praise بالنعمِfor the favors
I praise you for the favors you have bestowed anew,
I praise you for the new blessings you have bestowed
and I have not thanked you unless I praise those favors.
How can I not praise you when blessed by bounty?
البرkindness بيto me منكfrom you وطاpaved the way for العذرَthe excuse عندكbefore you ليfor me
دونwithout اعتذاريmy apology فلمso did not تعذلyou rebuke ولمand did not تلمyou blame
Your kindness to me paved the way for my excuse before you,
Kindness from you rains on me, excuse dwells with you for me
without my apologizing; you neither rebuked nor blamed me.
Without my apologies, you do not blame or find fault
وقامand stood علمكyour knowledge بيof me فاحتجand so pleaded عنكon your behalf ليfor me
مقامin the place of شاهدِa witness عدلٍupright غيرnot متهمِsuspected
And your knowledge of me stood forth, pleading for me on your behalf,
Your knowledge stood for me, defending you on my behalf
in the place of an upright witness above suspicion.
Like an honest witness, free of accusation
رددتyou returned ماليmy wealth ولمand did not تمننvaunt the favor عليover me بهfor it
وقبلand before ردكyour returning ماwhat ليwas mine قدalready حقنتyou spared دميmy blood
You restored my wealth without holding the favor over me,
You returned my wealth, not obliging me with it
and before restoring what was mine, you had already spared my blood.
And before you returned what was mine, my blood was spared
تعفوyou pardon بعدلٍwith justice وتسطوand you strike إنif سطوتَyou strike بهwith it
فلاso may never عدمناكwe lose you منas عافٍa pardoner ومنتقمand an avenger
You pardon with justice and, if you strike, strike with it.
You pardon justly, and seize tyrannically if you seize
So may we never lose you, pardoner and avenger.
We will not miss you, whether forgiving or avenging
فبؤتso I acknowledged منكfrom you وقدand already كافأتهاI had repaid it بيدٍa hand of kindness
هيit is الحياتانthe two lives منfrom موتٍdeath ومنand from عدمdestitution
So I acknowledged your hand of kindness, though I had repaid it:
So I have been blessed by you, repaying it with a hand
it was life twice over—from death and from destitution.
That is life from death, and existence from nonexistence
لئنif indeed جحدتكI deny you credit معروفاًa kindness مننتyou bestowed بهit
إنيsurely I لفيindeed in اللؤمbaseness أحظىmore richly endowed منكthan you فيin الكرمِgenerosity
If I deny you credit for a kindness you bestowed,
If I deny a favor you have granted
surely my share of baseness exceeds yours of generosity.
I find, in villainy, your generosity exceeds nobility
فلوso if بذلتُI gave دميmy blood أبغيseeking رضاكyour pleasure بهwith it
والمالَand the wealth حتىuntil أسلَّI pull off النعلَthe sandal منfrom قدميmy foot
So if I gave my blood, seeking your pleasure with it,
If I shed my blood, hoping to please you
and my wealth, until I pulled the sandal from my foot,
And my wealth, until my slipper falls off my foot
ماnot كانwould be ذاكthat سوىanything but عاريةٍa loan رجعتreturned
إليكَto you لوif لمnot تهبهاyou had given it كنتَyou would have لمnot تلمِbeen blamed
that would be nothing but a loan returned
That would only be a loan, returned
to you; had you not given it, you would not have been blamed.
To you - had you not granted it, you would not be blamed
