بَكىwept اِبنُson of عبيدَUbayd يوسُفَYusuf إِذwhen أَتاهُreached him
بِغُربَتِهِduring his stay abroad نَعىtidings of the deaths of كَريمتينِtwo dear daughters
Yusuf ibn Ubayd wept when there reached him,
Ibn Ubaid's son Yusuf wept when
Far from home, tidings of two dear daughters' deaths.
In his exile, he was told of the death of two noble ladies.
هُماthey both فَرعاtwo boughs of جَمالٍbeauty يُوسُفِيٍّJoseph-like
قَدalready اِنقَصَفاboth snapped أَمامَbefore رِياحِwinds of بينِseparation
They were two boughs of Joseph-like beauty,
They were branches of Yusuf's beauty,
That had snapped before the winds of separation.
Which had withered before the winds of separation.
فَرُوزاًFaruza فرقدٌa Farqad star اسماAsma أَخوهُits brother
فَواso, alas! أَسَفاًsorrow لَفَقَدِfor the loss of الفرقدينِthe two Farqad stars
Faruza was a Farqad star; Asma was its brother.
One was named Farwaz, the other Farkad, his sister -
So, alas for the loss of the two Farqad stars!
Alas for the loss of the two Farkads!
لِذلكَfor that reason خَطَّhe inscribed فَوقَهُماabove them both حُروفاًletters
لَقَدindeed كُتَبَتْwere written بِدَمعِwith the tears of المُقلَتينِthe two eyes
For that reason he inscribed letters above them both,
So for them he traced letters
Indeed written with the tears of both eyes.
Written with the tears of oppressed eyes.
أَياO دَمعِtears اُسقِwater قَبراًa grave أَرَّخوهُthey dated it
بَكَيتُI wept بِهِat it ذُبولَthe withering of الزَهرَتينِthe two flowers
O tears, water a grave they dated thus:
Oh tears, water a grave I have dated
“I wept there for the withering of the two flowers.”
With you, for the withering of the two blossoms.
