فَناحَ آلُ فُريجٍ هَولَ مَصرَعِهِ
Visit a resting place in whose darkness Yuhanna dwelt.
Visit a bed where John lay in darkness
Then the family of Furayj lamented the horror of his death.
So the nobles of Freij lamented his death

وَطالَ نَوحُ المَعالي عِندَ مَوقِعِهِ
A calamity that shattered the heart of noble deeds,
A sermon that made the hearts of the honoured crack
And the lament of lofty virtues was prolonged at his fall.
And the grieving of the eminent was prolonged at his place

Weighty affairs weep for him, just as
The responsibilities of matters weep for him as
A brother of misery waters his dust with his tears.
A brother of the bereaved waters his grave with his tears

فَاِهتَزَّ رُبعُ دمشقٍ مِن تَزعزُعِهِ
A pillar tottered in Beirut, collapsing,
A pillar in Beirut collapsed and crumbled
So the precinct of Damascus trembled from his tottering.
So a quarter of Damascus shook from its collapse

يا رَحمةَ اللَهِ حِلِّي فَوقَ مَضجَعِهِ
And he lay in a grave whose chronicler cried:
And he rests in a tomb whose historian called out
O mercy of God, alight upon his resting place!
"Oh God's mercy, settle over his resting place."
