Upon your grave-soil the morning showers pour,
O departed one, sheltered beneath God's shade.

In your wake, you have wounded hearts with an arrow of grief;
each eyelid bears a trace of its keen blade.

A lamentation stands beneath the wing of night;
in it, dusk and the predawn hour wear dyed hems.

حَقّit is fitting عَلىfor عَبَراتِthe tears of السُّحبِthe clouds تَنفَجرُto burst forth
And mourning stretches through the layers of clouds;
rightly must the clouds' tears burst forth.

I entrust to God a branch that bowed, broken,
and every heart bowed, itself broken.

A storm from the decrees of fate blew upon it,
and through it, the embers of grief began to blaze.

As though the waters of its freshness, once dried away,
now streamed upon it from eyelids.

They have gone from us, alas, without fruit;
so, after him, grief bears no fruit.

Long is the wailing for him from every heart,
burning, melting with anguish whenever it remembers.

And every weeper's face is withered after losing a youth
whose fresh face the worms have reduced to fragments.

O God's mercy, dwell in the grave-soil of a moon,
for whose sake the moon has robed itself in darkness.

fresh and well-watered; the tomb has enclosed him as a jewel,
met by matching pearls from our tears.

O grave of Jirjis, made of earth and stone,
that earth and stone have done no justice to the full moon,

Alas for the onslaughts of separation, ravaging
every soul, sparing none and leaving none.

Youth has become cheap in its eyes,
and gray hair and old age find no honor with it.

How immense was the pain you endured,
while you ended each day in gratitude, just as you began it.

enjoying bliss unclouded by distress.

By God, it is hard for me to console you
for his loss, while tears from my eyelids spill for him.

Of all calamities, this most deserves that hearts should bleed,
if their bleeding could fulfill any wish of ours.
