هَذاthis اِبنُson of يوسُفَYusuf مِنfrom بَنيthe descendants of الدَبّاسِal-Dabbas قَدindeed
هَذا اِبنُ يوسُفَ مِن بَني الدَبّاسِ قَد
سَقَتِwatered الدُموعُthe tears ثَراهُhis grave's earth بَردَthe coolness of مَعينِflowing spring water
سَقَتِ الدُموعُ ثَراهُ بَردَ مَعينِ
This is the son of Yusuf, of the house of al-Dabbas; indeed,
This is the son of Yusuf from the family of Dabbas
tears have watered his grave's earth with cool spring water.
Tears have watered his tomb with cool spring water
شَهمٌa noble-hearted man قَضىdied فَثَوىand so rested بِأَكرَمِin the noblest تُربةٍearth
شَهمٌ قَضى فَثَوى بِأَكرَمِ تُربةٍ
ضَمَّتembraced جَوانِبُهاits bounds أَجلَّthe most revered دَفينِone buried
ضَمَّت جَوانِبُها أَجلَّ دَفينِ
A noble-hearted man who died and rested in the noblest earth,
A brave man who passed away and was laid to rest
whose bounds embraced the most revered of those buried.
In the most honorable soil which embraced this noble buried one
قَدindeed كانَhe was فيin دُنياهُhis earthly life أَفضَلَthe finest عصمةٍsafeguard
قَد كانَ في دُنياهُ أَفضَلَ عصمةٍ
تُرجَىhoped for وَأَحسَنَand the finest قُدوةٍexample فيin الدّينِfaith
تُرجَى وَأَحسَنَ قُدوةٍ في الدّينِ
He had been, in his earthly life, the finest safeguard
In his worldly life he was of utmost chastity
one could hope for, and the finest example in faith,
Hoped for and the best example in religion
حَتّىuntil مَضىhe departed نَحوtoward الإِلهِGod فَنالَand so gained مِنfrom
حَتّى مَضى نَحو الإِلهِ فَنالَ مِن
أَعمالِهِhis deeds لِلفَوزِfor salvation خَيرthe best ضَمينِguarantor
أَعمالِهِ لِلفَوزِ خَير ضَمينِ
until he departed toward God and gained from
Until he passed away towards God and attained
his deeds the best guarantor of salvation.
From his deeds the best gains for salvation
ومسطِّرِand the recorder of التّاريخِthe date حرَّرَwrote قائِلاًsaying
ومسطِّرِ التّاريخِ حرَّرَ قائِلاً
سِرُّthe mystery of الخَلاصِsalvation بَداbecame manifest لِقَسطَنطينِto Constantine
سِرُّ الخَلاصِ بَدا لِقَسطَنطينِ
And the recorder of the date wrote, saying:
And the recorder of history wrote saying
“The mystery of salvation became manifest to Constantine.”
