This is a book whose verses are set forth

With rare gems that put jeweled necklaces to shame.

Its cadences surpassed rhymes, for they came

In wondrous diction, embellished with eloquence.

In it, Alexander dictated maxims that

Aristotle did not dictate to Alexander.

Maxims that teach the discerning in an hour

What the experience of ages does not teach them.

He offered people's minds a sprig of basil

From a garden of thought, fruitful through eloquence.

She appeared before us like a bride, adorned

By eloquence's brocades beneath wondrous embroidery.

Arab in dress, within her sash

Is a veiled virgin of foreign origin.

She spoke in invented tales, yet was held above

The station of a liar in what she recounted.

God bless her discerning author! How many have appeared

From him—marvels of wisdom that were not denied.

    فَلِذاكَ قُلنا الفَضلُ لِلمُتَأَخِّرِ

    Now has come what eluded those who came before;

And so we said: the merit belongs to the latecomer.
