This daughter of Yusuf’s house has been struck down
This maiden of Yusuf's clan has been struck down
by the Fates; and Time mourned its Joseph.
By Death, and Time mourned her Yusuf.

At twenty-one years of age, she passed away—alas—
At twenty-one she passed away, alas,
like a flower the decrees of Fate went forth to pluck.
Like a flower the fates began to pluck.

She left Ibrahim’s home, journeying away
She left the house of Ibrahim, departing
from the house of Ayyub, with sorrows following close behind.
From the family of Ayyub, with sorrows following her.

She left her child sobbing in the cradle,
And left her infant sobbing in the cradle,
weeping for her, yet unable to turn her back toward him.
He weeps for her, but cannot stir her compassion.

لَمَّا دَعاها فَلَم يَلبَث تَوَقُّفُها
She hastened away to her Lord, the All-Forgiving;
She hastened to her Lord, the All-Forgiving,
when He called her, she did not linger or pause.
When He called her; her delay was brief.

Thus the scribe who set down her chronogram proclaimed:
Thus her chronogram's inscriber proclaimed:
“Sultana’s station is among the hosts of the Throne.”
Sultana—her place is among the hosts of the Throne.
