فَأَبكىand made weep رُبَىthe hills of لُبنانَLebanon يَومَthe day of مِضِيِّهِhis passing
The virtuous, learned cleric al-Zuwayni departed too soon,
The noble scholar Al-Zawini passed away hastily,
And made Lebanon's hills weep on the day of his passing.
So he made the youths of Lebanon weep the day he left.
مِنَamong الفاعِليthe doers of الإِحسانِgood ماnot أَنْفكَّceased دَأبُهُhis habitual endeavor
إِلىuntil أَنthat جَرىspread فيamong الناسِthe people صَوتُthe sound of نَعيِّهِhis death announcement
Among those who do good, he never ceased his devoted work
He never ceased to do good deeds,
Until word of his death rang out among the people.
Until the news of his death spread among people.
كَأَنَّas though لُويساًLouis لَمdid not يَكُنbe قَطُّever مَلجأٌa refuge

As though Louis had never been a refuge
It was as if Louis had never been a refuge,
For the distressed, from heights both near and far,
For the unfortunate, the far and the near.

Nor a star of right guidance, by whose counsel one is guided,
Nor a guiding star for righteousness, guided by his opinion,
Nor a wellspring of knowledge, by whose waters one is healed.
Nor a spring of knowledge, quenched by his watering.
كَريمٌa generous man قَضىspent فيin طاعةِobedience to اللَهِGod عُمرَهُhis life
وَنفَعَand benefited الوَرىhumankind فيin صُبحِهِhis morning وَعَشِيِّهِand his evening
A generous man who spent his life in obedience to God,
He lived his life obedient to God,
And benefited humankind in his morning and his evening.
And benefited the world in his morn and eve.

لَدَيهِin His presence بِباديthe manifest part of لُطفِهِHis favor وَخَفيِّهِand its hidden part
And he left his earthly life for God, winning
He left his world for God triumphantly,
His favor, both manifest and hidden, in His presence.
With the wonders of His grace open and hidden to him.
فَاقبلَthen came forth تأريخيmy chronogram يُناديcalling out مُبَشِّراًbearing glad tidings
كَريمٌprecious لَدىbefore الرَحمنِthe Most Merciful مَوتُthe death of صَفيِّهِHis chosen one
Then my chronogram came forth, proclaiming glad tidings:
So my date proclaims, giving good news,
Precious before the Most Merciful is the death of His chosen one.
"A noble soul is with The Merciful in his death."
