تَعَجَّبَmarveled قَومٌsome people مِنat تَأخِّرِthe backwardness of حالِناour condition
وَلاand no عَجَبٌwonder فيin حالِناour condition إِنif تَأَخَّراit fell behind
Some people marveled at the backwardness of our condition;
Yet it is no wonder if our condition has fallen behind:
فَمُذfor since أَصبَحَتbecame أَذنابُناour tails وَهيَwhile they are أَرؤُسٌheads
غَدَوناwe have become بِحُكمby the law of الطَبعِnature نَمشيwe walk إَلىtoward وَراthe rear
For since our tails have become heads,
We have, by nature’s law, come to walk backward.
