Seek refuge in your resolve when a helper is hard to find.

And let no lassitude toy with your determination.

And keep an eye awake in the darkness of calamity,

With a shining moon drawn from its own thought.

And do not entrust affairs to fingers

To which those affairs do not belong.

For you are the most faithful of those who strive for you in what

You attempt, and you are worthy of it.

And affairs may be entrusted to a devoted man,

But the devoted man may sometimes grow weary.

Your hopes are most fully realized in what you pursue

    Yourself, deliberately, without borrowing aid.

The full moons received the light of a sun,

Yet the sun did not make the full moons self-sufficient.

Nor do we deny the merit of people

Whose merit among us is well known:

Men who have done good work; yet

The master of a house knows best what is within it.

Sons of my mother, awake from a slumber

Whose long duration has wearied the bed.

    If life passes in slumber,

    Beds and graves become alike.

God forbid that a mighty undertaking

Should be sought by a petty ambition.

For when an undertaking becomes momentous,

It demands effort of equal magnitude.

So undertake the task with a sound heart,

Whose sincerity is supported by bold resolve.

And never let your passions carry you away,

For whoever rides their paths goes astray and often stumbles.

I see that we have grown alike in speech,

Yet what good is that if our inner convictions differ?

All birds have wings and feathers,

Yet among them are those that cannot fly.

And indeed, truth among people is a sun

That rises upon the horizon of minds.

So from it comes fire for the livers of the ignorant,

And from it comes light for the eyes of the wise.

So rise in mutual support, O my people,

So that our eventual fate may be good,

And, after long hardship and toil, we may win

What the ages have wrested from our hands,

And raise for civilization every lofty edifice

Past which the clouds drift on their way.

Are we not descended from those who adorned

The pages and the ages with their memory,

And brought forth in learning many a sun

Whose radiant beauty adorns the ether?

Let us follow their path and strive through the years,

With a resolve that neither tires nor falters.

And let us not boast of their ancient glory,

For that, to us, is a great disgrace.

Do those who came before us build greatness,

Only for our hands to lie idle once it is attained?

I seem to see the land lamenting in sorrow,

And ruin has laid waste to its splendor.

The cedars in Lebanon moan in grief,

And Tyre mourns after that glory.

And Palmyra lies in unending devastation,

And its only inhabitants are vultures.

And Baalbek now stands with nothing in it

But ruins pointing to its grandeur.

    Calamities assail it every day,

As falcons swoop upon Egyptian vultures.

Had the land known what had befallen it,

It would almost convulse with anguish.

O God, what an ominous calamity,

That grieves both eyes and breasts!

And eyes have taken pleasure in sleep, yet

Their sleep will be followed by scalding tears.

Through you and your striving, lofty achievements are built,

And their splendid, verdant garden thrives.

And the shade of the great state over us

    Heralds our attainment of success.

For that is rain upon the great trees of justice,

And that is a wall around the garden of learning.
