رُوزاRosa فَتاةُdaughter of بَنيthe family of الجاويشِal-Jawish قَدindeed رَحَلَتshe departed
كَالغُصنِlike a branch لاقَتهُmet it ريحُthe wind of البينِparting فَاِنكَسَراand so it broke
Rosa, daughter of the al-Jawish family, has departed,
Rosa, a maiden of the Jaouiche tribe, has departed
like a branch that snapped when the wind of parting struck it.
Like a branch that the wind of separation has met and broken
فيat الخَمسfive عَشرةten قَدindeed وَلَّتshe departed فحسرتُهاand sorrow for her
تَبقىwill remain مَدىthroughout الدَّهرِall time لاnot خَمساًfive وَلاnor عَشراten
At fifteen she passed away; sorrow for her
At fifteen she passed away and I lamented her
will endure for all time—not five years, nor ten.
She will remain forever, not five nor ten
أَمَّتshe headed for سعادتُهاher bliss العُظمىsupreme وَقدand indeed تَرَكَتshe left
صَفاءَthe serenity of والدِهاher father اِسكندَرٍIskandar كَدراclouded
She headed for her supreme bliss, and left
Her great happiness has ended and she left behind
her father Iskandar’s serenity clouded.
The clarity of her father Alexander darkened
فَخطَّso he penned تاريخَهُhis chronogram فيهاabout her يَقولُhe says بِهِin it
ياO تُربةَsoil of الوَردِthe rose حَيّاكِmay it greet you النَدىthe dew سَحَراbefore dawn
So he penned his chronogram about her, saying in it:
So the date of her passing wrote of her
O soil of the rose, may the dew greet you before dawn!
O soil of roses, the dew bids you good morning at dawn
