O giver of pearls between ink and paper,
O guide of pearls between ink and paper
Necklaces that encircled my neck with their jewels.
With their adornments necklaces have girded my neck

Those rhymes that have sprung up like flowers
Those rhymes that like flowers have bloomed
Shine proudly in an embroidered robe of dazzling patterns.
Blossoming in splendid, brilliant attire on paths

Each a maiden who came unveiling herself, then revealed
From every maiden I met, radiant, she came forth
A cup that intoxicated me, and I have not sobered.
A cup with which I got drunk, and did not awaken

I prolonged it [wording unclear]; the dark core of the heart she enchanted
Extended by the black-hearted one whom she seduced
Had the black of the pupils among its enviers.
So that among her envious ones were those black of eye

A foster-daughter to whom the sorrowing heart grew attached—
A beloved whom the passionate heart clung to
And humankind was created only from clotted blood.
Yet man was only created from a clot

A man of outstanding, dazzling qualities offered her,
The excellent descriptor gifted her with it
Swift of finger, darting like a flash of lightning.
A past, like the flashing light, set forth
فَتىًa young man لَقَدindeed باتَspent the night بِالآدابِwith literature مُشتَغِلاًoccupied
وَباتَand spent the night أَمثالَهُhis peers بِاللَهوِin amusement وَالنَزقِand frivolity
A young man who indeed spent the night absorbed in literature,
A youth who busied himself with literature
While his peers spent the night in amusement and frivolity.
While the likes of him busied themselves with frivolity and waste

Keen of heart, ablaze with the fire of forbearance,
A heart, kindled by the fire of wisdom
His speech flowed like a rushing torrent from rainclouds.
Flowing with speech like pouring rain

How fine in a young man is forbearance that adorns him,
And excellent for the youth is wisdom that adorns him
While his temple-lock does not recite the Surah of Daybreak.
His judgment not lacking the Chapter of Daybreak
فَماso not كمَالُperfection الفَتىthe young man بِالشَيبِin grayness فيin شعرٍhair

For a young man's perfection is not in grayness of hair,
For the youth's perfection is not in white hair
But a young man's perfection is in grayness of character.
Rather, the youth's perfection is in character
