O abodes of loved ones, what became of those

we once knew in your dwelling grounds?

And why do the exhausted mounts set you down?

Do you think you will find a place of safety?

You are fit only for a lover's pause,

who calls out, then returns humbled and abased.

God, my tears within your bounds, and my longing!

Have you seen before me a mourner singing of love?

And my heart's throbbing with sorrows—do you think

it seeks to catch up with the tribe wherever it has moved its camp?

Far beyond reach! Between us and those who left lie deserts,

where, at dusk, the sandgrouse's gaze leads it astray.

    أَتَرى يُحاولُ بَينَها مُتَخَلِّلا

    And upon the howdahs is many a gleaming sword;

do you think it tries to slip between them?

God is greatest! O she-camels, you have left me

more bewildered with longing than you in those wastes.

You left me what you crave but a little of:

tear-water that never ceases to flow.

    Forever I yearn—not as you yearn—love-distraught,

watering the dwelling grounds with my freely streaming tears.

Our nights changed, and their sweetness was turned

to sorrow; it is time's nature to change.

And calamities showed me every strange happening,

leaving my nape white like the thaghama plant.

I cast aside my patience amid calamities, and they brought me more

weariness; then I found patient endurance more becoming.

Trials kept me sleepless, and I remained in

a night of overwhelming woes, black and pitch-dark,

until my dawn's face shone forth, and there emerged

the face of hopes, radiant and beaming.

And the stars of ill fortune fell, sinking from sight,

when they saw the night retreat in fright.

How dear his countenance, and the sun of a caliphate

that sent him forth, and he lit the people's eyelids!

    فَهُناكَ نورٌ فَوقَ نورٍ يُجتَلَى

    His rays and the sweetness of his praise shone forth;

so there, light upon light is revealed.

This is the king's minister, whose honor

puts the Pleiades and al-Simak the Unarmed to shame.

His insight is keener than a sharpened arrow

in every difficulty, and his stroke more deadly.

And he is soundest in conduct among those who have grappled with affairs,

when even the discerning man finds no recourse.

He governed the lands, and his justice there was

sheltering shade, and security there a watering place.

    حلفَ الحفاظُ عَلَيهِ أَن لا يَغفَلا

    Always he watches over them with a wakeful eye;

protective devotion has bound it by oath never to grow heedless.

He speaks decisively when he judges, and when he rises to act,

in his resolve, he mirrors the decree sent down.

And when he speaks, from his utterance scatter

pearls worn as ornaments by wrists and necks.

Souls rush toward him because of his kindness,

yet awe and exalted rank turn them back from him.

And the swords behold in his counsels

that which, were it to target their edge, would leave it chipped.

O visitor to Beirut, you have bestowed on her

a favor deserving remembrance and loyalty.

She is perplexed, unsure whether to glory in the honor

you bring, or face blame for falling short and feel ashamed.

Good fortune she has gained from you; and thus

your way among mankind has ever been to act justly.

Through you, blessings overflowed among our dwellings,

until their flood surpassed all that was hoped for.

They set an advancing rain-cloud drifting over us,

which met, through your bounty, another advancing rain-cloud.

    فَلبِسنَها لَما رَأينكَ مُقبِلا

    And spring clothed our dwelling grounds in bordered cloaks;

they put them on when they saw you approaching.

And those flowers smiled; each of them

shone with pearls, bestowing necklaces and crowns.

So they echoed your praise; this is the hurried offering of one who falls short:

even if he spent his whole lifetime, he would still be hasty.

I tried to praise you, but I was betrayed by

a pen I envision as a spindle in my hand tomorrow.

So I found that no expression could do your praise justice,

and found the praise of most people a strained invention.

    وَعلمتَهُ فَعَذَرتَني مُتفضِّلا

    Helpless, I reproached my failure to describe you;

you recognized it and graciously excused me.

And perhaps my inability to praise you speaks

for me more eloquently and at greater length than my praise.

And dawn is clearer than a speaker's words:

"Morning has appeared," when it shines and stands revealed.
