خَطبٍ أَسالَ دُموعَ مُقلَتِهِ دَمَا

خَطبٍ أَسالَ دُموعَ مُقلَتِهِ دَمَا

Jirjis of the house of Shamʿun has lamented over

Jirjis of the Sham'un family has wept

a calamity that made his eye’s tears flow as blood.

Over a disaster that brought tears flowing from his eyelids

جَرَحَت يَدُ الأَقدارِ مُهجَتَهُ وَقَد

جَرَحَت يَدُ الأَقدارِ مُهجَتَهُ وَقَد

خَطَفَت وَحيدَتَهُ العَزيزةَ مَريَما

خَطَفَت وَحيدَتَهُ العَزيزةَ مَريَما

The hand of fate has wounded his heart, and has

The hand of fate has wounded his love

snatched away his beloved only daughter, Maryam.

And snatched away his precious Marima

بِكرٌ مَضَت في الستَّ عَشرَ كَأَنَّها

بِكرٌ مَضَت في الستَّ عَشرَ كَأَنَّها

بَدرٌ أَوى في الأَرضِ لَحداً مُظلِما

بَدرٌ أَوى في الأَرضِ لَحداً مُظلِما

A maiden, she passed away at sixteen, as though she were

A girl gone at just sixteen, as though she were

a full moon that took refuge in a dark grave in the earth.

A full moon that set in the darkness of a grave

فَلَهُ بِمصرَعِها العَزاءَ لِأَنَّها

فَلَهُ بِمصرَعِها العَزاءَ لِأَنَّها

حازَت بِتَقواها النَعيمَ الأَعظَما

حازَت بِتَقواها النَعيمَ الأَعظَما

So there is solace for him in her death, for she

For her death he is consoled, for she has attained

has attained through her piety the greatest bliss.

Through her piety, the greatest of blessings

كانتَ بتاريخٍ ملاكاً عِندَنا

كانتَ بتاريخٍ ملاكاً عِندَنا

وَاليَوم باتَت مِن مَلائكةِ السَّما

وَاليَوم باتَت مِن مَلائكةِ السَّما

She was—as the chronogram says—an angel among us;

She was for us once an angel on earth

and today she has become one of heaven’s angels.

And today dwells among the angels of heaven
