مَضى غِريغورِيُوسْ راعي الرُعاةِ إِلى
دارِabode of المَراحِمِmercies عَنfrom دارِabode of الملماتِcalamities
دارِ المَراحِمِ عَن دارِ الملماتِ
Gregory, shepherd of shepherds, departed to
Gregory the shepherd of shepherds has passed away
the abode of mercies from the abode of calamities.
From the abode of trials to the home of mercies
حَبرٌa prelate قَدindeed اِنثَلَّcrumbled عَرشُthrone of المَجدِglory حينَwhen مَضىhe departed
حَبرٌ قَد اِنثَلَّ عَرشُ المَجدِ حينَ مَضى
وَاِنهَدَّand collapsed مِنfrom بَعدِهِafter him رُكنُpillar of المُهِماتِimportant undertakings
وَاِنهَدَّ مِن بَعدِهِ رُكنُ المُهِماتِ
A prelate—glory’s throne crumbled when he departed,
A skillful writer, when he passed away the throne of glory shook
and after him the pillar of great undertakings collapsed.
And after him a pillar of great tasks collapsed
رَبُّmaster of المَساعيendeavors الَّتيwhich زانَتadorned مَحاسِنُهاtheir merits
رَبُّ المَساعي الَّتي زانَت مَحاسِنُها
غرّnoble السَجاياtraits of character بِأَنواعِwith kinds of المبرّاتِcharitable deeds
غرّ السَجايا بِأَنواعِ المبرّاتِ
Master of endeavors whose merits adorned
O Lord of the efforts whose beauties he adorned
noble traits with every kind of charity.
He filled the natures with various kinds of blessings
أَحياhe revived العُلومَthe sciences فَأَحيَتso they revived ذكرَهُhis memory وَسَقىand he watered
أَحيا العُلومَ فَأَحيَت ذكرَهُ وَسَقى
غِراسَهاtheir plantings بِالأَياديwith beneficent hands الحاتِمياتِHatim-like in generosity
غِراسَها بِالأَيادي الحاتِمياتِ
He revived the sciences, and they revived his memory; he watered
He revived knowledge so his remembrance lived
their plantings with hands as generous as Hatim’s.
And watered its plants with firm hands
ياO كَوكَباًstar عَنfrom دِيارِlands of الشَرقِthe East غابَvanished وَكَمand how many
يا كَوكَباً عَن دِيارِ الشَرقِ غابَ وَكَم
جَلَّىdispelled بِهاin them مِنof دياجٍdarknesses مُدلَهِمّاتِpitch-black
جَلَّى بِها مِن دياجٍ مُدلَهِمّاتِ
O star that vanished from the lands of the East—how much
O star disappeared from the lands of the East, how much
pitch-black darkness you dispelled there!
He illuminated with splendid shining gleams
وَارَتْكَconcealed you أَيديhands of القَضاfate عَنّاfrom us مُؤَرِخَةًrecording a date
وَارَتْكَ أَيدي القَضا عَنّا مُؤَرِخَةً
يَوماًa day لِتُشرقَso that you may shine فيin أُفْقِhorizon of السَماواتِthe heavens
يَوماً لِتُشرقَ في أُفْقِ السَماواتِ
The hands of fate concealed you from us, marking
And the hands of fate have refrained from us recording
a day for you to shine on the horizon of the heavens.
A day to shine in the horizon of the heavens
