Salute a portrait of one whose grave's soil is greeted

By breezes of favor and the coolness of successive rains.

His likeness appeared in it—rather, the likeness of

    Virtue, nobility, fidelity, and affection.

My hand drew him, and in my heart there is

A likeness of him such as I drew with my hands.

So it is as though I copied him from my heart,

Or as though I had placed my heart within it.

And one said, 'Describe for us what beauty is'; I said to him:

It is that which the hand of definition cannot grasp.

No one among humankind is ignorant of beauty,

Yet none of them knows its essence.

A mystery that gleams beyond the senses, traced

Within the soul, yet set apart from understanding.

But the eye sees of it the form of its bearer,

And its share of what it sees is the body alone.
