    جاوزَ الأَمرُ دَمعَكَ المُستَهِلاّ

    O early mourner, gently now;

The matter has gone beyond your streaming tears.

    وَلَقَد كانَ لَو شَفى سَهلا

    Before us, every mortal heart was rent;

And it would indeed have been easy, had that brought healing.

We are only the bereaved and the fallen:

One suffers, while the other decays in the dust.

There is no land not watered by a shower of tears,

Nor sky not saddened by a bereaved mother's wailing.

    فَوقَ هاماتِنا دَنا فَتَدَلَّى

    A banner has spread parting among mortals;

Above our heads it drew near and hung low.

Every soul in its lifetime is hostage to a day

That renders time, and all it holds, vain.

Woe to these hearts! How often they receive

Embers, seared by the anguish of parting.

We deem death unjust; yet, by my life,

The injustice is reckoned earlier, in birth.

Water in its basin, and dust—

They bear no trace, whether the age be sound or stricken.

Life has distracted me from itself with what it holds

Of sorrow, which has become my occupation.

    كُلَّما سالَ زادَ جِسميَ مَحلا

    And my bloom withered in the water of my eyelids;

Whenever it flowed, it left my body more parched.

Beneath my complaint lies what is beyond complaint,

And what has exhausted and wearied my patience.

By my life, how can I elegize, when I bear

What drives elegy away from me in stunned bewilderment?

The path of speech is too narrow for me, and my soul

Has paths narrower still than speech's domain.

The composing of poetry has defied me, until

Every sea of verse you entered proved shallow.

Oh, may God water, from the bellies of morning clouds,

The resting place where that full moon settled.

He vanished within its sides, and the

Star almost fell in his wake when he departed.

The wailing over him has lasted long from every weeper,

For a calamity that came with woe and proved grievous.

    فَإِذا اِنهَلَّ صارَ في الخَدِّ نَبلا

    Tears drip as water within the eye sockets;

But when they pour down, they become arrows on the cheek.

Grief for him within the hearts is followed

By desolation in the eyes that never lifts.

He was a pillar to a people; with him was cast down

Their summit of glory, when he fell.

And a keen blade in calamities, cut down

By a sword of judgment drawn from beside the Throne.

Indeed, an eye that weeps for Hibat Allah

Should shed blood as a free offering.

And if breasts lavish upon him

Their hearts, they have bestowed the least.

In him, the earth has enfolded the noblest being,

Pure among the noble in branch and root.

And in him embraced a garden of virtues,

Watered with downpours by the clouds of forbearance.

The most judicious of the accomplished in binding and loosing,

And the most august of the noble in qualities and in bearing burdens.

His practice was to benefit humankind; if this could not

Be done one day, he undertook to ward off harm.

    لَم تَصلْ عِندَهُ الخَبائثُ حَبلا

    He never ceased to be clear-hearted and pure;

No vile thing ever fastened a cord to him.

Untarnished in honor, chaste in heart and eye,

Pure of soul, righteous in word and deed.

O grave, do justice to a guest

Within you who has always been worthy of honor.

We have known you as the finest soil; but do you

Know the excellence and nobility within your sides?

May the rain of clouds keep flowing over you,

And prayers for mercy be recited over him within you.
