ياO راحِلاًdeparted one تَحتَbeneath ظلِّthe shade of اللَّهِGod يَستَتِرُtaking shelter
يا راحِلاً تَحتَ ظلِّ اللَّهِ يَستَتِرُ
Upon your grave-soil the morning showers pour,
O departed one, sheltered beneath God's shade.

In your wake, you wounded hearts with an arrow of grief;
Every eyelid bears the mark of its keen blade.

A lamentation rises beneath the wing of night;
In it, dusk and predawn alike have stained hems.

حَقّ عَلى عَبَراتِ السُّحبِ تَنفَجرُ
And mourning stretches through the layers of clouds;
Rightly must the clouds' tears burst forth.

فَمالَ كُل فُؤادٍ وَهوَ مُنكَسرُ
I entrust to God a bough that drooped, broken,
So every heart drooped, broken too.

A tempest of fate blew upon it,
And through it the embers of sorrow began to blaze.

As though the waters that had dried from his bloom
Now streamed down upon him from weeping eyes.

They have gone from us, alas, without fruit;
So after him, sorrow yields no fruit.

Burning, melting with anguish at each remembrance.

And every weeper's face is ravaged for a youth
Whose once-fresh face the worms have reduced to fragments.

O mercy of God, settle in the grave-soil of a moon
For whom the moon has clothed itself in darkness.

Met by its peers, the pearls of our tears.

O Jirjis's grave, of earth and stone,
That earth and stone have not dealt fairly with the full moon,

In a wilderness that blooms with waters of tears.

Alas for the onslaughts of parting, deadly
To every soul, sparing none and leaving none.

Nor are gray hair and old age honored in its sight.

Yet you remained thankful, at evening as at dawn.

That its outcome in eternity's abode was victory.

Granted bliss in which no trouble dwells.

For his loss, while tears for him fall from my eyelids.

This calamity most deserves that hearts should bleed for it,
If any wish of ours could be fulfilled by their bleeding.
