    وَصابر عَلَيهِ ما اِستَطَعتَ لَهُ صَبرا

    All affairs come from Him who commands all affairs;

and endure them with as much patience as you can.

Life is made of such things as you lament; I only

see the sufferer's dismay as his second affliction.

How becoming is composure in a man! For he,

if he spurns it by choice, must assume it by force.

    فَبرْءٌ يَلي سُقماً وَيُسرٌ يلِي عُسرا

    Such is time: it never stays in one condition;

recovery follows sickness, and ease follows hardship.

And the end of every hardship, however long it lasts,

is relief that calls the sorrowful: 'Glad tidings to you!'

If one night we miss the full moon's face,

then after night we must surely reach the dawn.

This age tests the patience of its men,

and thoroughly smelts them to refine them into gold.

And though sword-blades endure hardship in polishing,

they emerge after polishing, smiling and radiant.

May I be your ransom, you who spend the night lamenting wasting illness,

and I share his pain, enfolded in my burning liver.

and you whom my wounded heart has visited; I only

wish my eye to know fully how he fares.

If the illness has stayed with you a long while,

your patience has cast brevity upon its length.

And if one day an ailment has toyed with your body,

it has not toyed with your honor or your radiant character.

I esteem you too highly to call you a sea, for I

see that the faintest breath has stirred the sea.

I have known you as one whom no great calamity alarms

at heart, and who fears no harm from misfortune.

And one who has tasted both flavors of fortune would not

care whether the days were vinegar or wine.

And one who has kept company with dangers until he becomes

their intimate—you find no terror in his heart.

To you, a greeting that goes forth fragrant with your name,

vying with perfume in the wilderness through its own scent.

A greeting sent by one who grieves: whenever there comes

to you a greeting from him, he follows it with ten more.
