قَدindeed سارَhas journeyed جِرجِسُJirjis فيin الشَبيبةِyouth راحِلاًdeparting
كَالغُصنِlike a branch فاجَأهُsuddenly overtook him قَضاءٌfate عاجِلُswift
Jirjis has journeyed away in his youth,
Like a branch overtaken by sudden doom,
رَيَّانُfull of sap قَدindeed غَدرَتdealt treacherously بِهِwith him أَيديthe hands of الرَّدَىdeath
ظُلماًunjustly فَجَفَّso he withered وَكُلُّwhile every دَمعٍtear سائلُflowing
Full of sap, betrayed by the hands of death
Unjustly; he withered while every tear flowed.

غُصَصاًpangs of grief يَدومُendures بِهاthrough them الأَسىsorrow المُتواصِلُunceasing
He left behind for the family of al-Majdalani
Pangs of grief that sustain unceasing sorrow.
وَلَقدand indeed تَوَسَّدَhe laid his head نازِلاًdescending فيin مَضجَعٍa resting place
فيin طيِّهِits folds صَبرُthe patience of الحَشاشةِthe soul نازِلُresting
And indeed he laid his head, descending into a resting place,
Within whose folds the soul's patience rests.
فَجَرىso may it flow سَحابُthe cloud of العَفوِpardon يَسقيwatering تُربةًsoil
أَمسىcame to be بِهاin it أَرَّخَتُI recorded the date غُصنٌa branch ذابِلُwithered
So may the cloud of pardon flow, watering the soil
Where now lies—I marked the date—a withered branch.
