The noble Sallum, son of Mezher, mourned for

a youth like a swaying bough in the garden of beauty.

He weeps for the loss of dear Elias; and what

good does weeping do between dawn and dusk?

He called to him: “You left me before your time, and

you have already forgotten me, while my heart has not forgotten.

So my tears watered a grave whose date we record:

You now lie within it, O bough of my hopes.”
