Indeed, beauty's basil has traced his sideburns,

revealing its greenness upon the roses of his cheeks.

And his beauty cast upon those graceful limbs

a slenderness that clothed lovers in its garb.

Blessed is He who set his eyelid over all creation,

and bestowed its brokenness on the lovers' hearts.

    كَذبنَ فَما يَحكينَ إِلّا نِفارَهْ

    The gazelles suppose they share his beauty;

they lie: they imitate only his skittishness.

He held himself so aloof as to be unattainable; yet merely

seeing his robe touch him aroused his jealousy.

A mighty one: the bough falls prostrate before his form,

and beauties' mouths kiss his waistcloth.

He wields authority that lovers obey,

and beauty's army has secured his victory.

And what a heart was mine, the day it was summoned to love,

when the eyelids' envoys had guaranteed its obedience!

And a glance has a meaning whose secret the heart understands,

even if the eyes' gaze does not lift its veil.

And love has pathways between souls

that keep its experience beyond the body's grasp.

And I love one with whom my soul has made its home,

though the nights have set his dwelling far from me.

A beloved whom God fashioned from the clay of faithfulness,

and whose nature He forged from nobility of character.

Pure of heart, steadfast in affection, sincere:

I found him the same in private and in public.

One who falls short has grown accustomed to his favors,

has grown accustomed to offering him his apology.

And many a maiden has bared a wrist for me,

whose palm and bracelet I dyed with my tears.

    لفَظتُ إِنائي بَعدَها وَعقارَهْ

    She gave me a cup of the purest wine of his words;

I cast aside my vessel and its wine thereafter.

An aged wine whose seal Time has never broken,

though it lived in the days of Adnan and Nizar.

I drank of it until I was drunk, and knew nothing

in my drunkenness but my passion and remembrance of him.

O moon, separation has hidden your face

and cast your moonless gloom upon my wasted body.

And O you who divide my eyes' portion in two,

comforting them by night, but shunning them by day.

May God curse the parting that has grieved me! How often

I grieved, even with his dwelling near, in dread of it.

    وَكَيفَ بِمَن لا يَستَطيعُ اِصطِبارَهْ

    I knew that neither sorrow could avail me;

but what of one who cannot bear it patiently?

And whoever has tried complaint and found it fruitless

settles his resolve on gracious patience.
