بِغَضِّin the bloom of شَبابِهِhis youth الزاهيradiant الرَطيبِtender
Today Mikha'il has departed from us,
In the bloom of his radiant, tender youth.

وَلَكنbut بَعدafter تَجريحِwounding القُلوبِhearts
A youth like a sword, sheathed in earth,
But only after wounding hearts.

بِهِbecause of it بَيروتُBeirut رنَّتrang out بِالنَحيبِwith lamentation
He brought sorrow to the family of al-Majdalani;
Because of it, Beirut rang with lamentation.

And here he rests in a tomb that has been watered
By the people's eyes with streaming tears.
لِذَلِكَtherefore كُلّeveryone ماwhenever وافاهُhe visits him أَرِّخْrecord the date
يَنوحُhe laments بِهِat it عَلىover مَوتِthe death of الغَريبِthe stranger
Thus all who visit him—record the date—
Lament there the death of the stranger.
