فَتىًa youth كَغُصنٍlike a bough بِرَوضِin the garden of الحُسنbeauty مَيّالِswaying
Noble Sallum, son of Mizhar, lamented over
a youth, like a swaying bough in beauty’s garden.
يَبكيhe weeps عَلىover فَقَدthe loss of إِلياسَIlyas العَزيزthe beloved وَماand what
يُجديavails البُكاweeping بَينَbetween إِصباحٍdaybreak وَآصالِand evenings
He weeps for the loss of beloved Ilyas; yet what
does weeping avail, from dawn to dusk?
ناداهُhe called to him فارَقتَنيyou parted from me قَبلَbefore الأَوانِthe proper time وَقَدand already
سَلَوتَyou have forgotten عَنِّيabout me وَقَلبيand my heart لَيسَis not بِالسّاليone who has forgotten
He called to him: “You left me before your time, and have
forgotten me, but my heart has not forgotten.
لِذاtherefore سَقَتwatered أَدمُعيmy tears قَبراًa grave نُؤرِّخُهُwe record its date
أَصبَحتَyou have become فيin جَنبهِits side ياO غُصنَbough of آماليmy hopes
Thus my tears watered a grave whose date we record:
You now lie within it, O bough of my hopes.”
