مِن بَعدِ أَنطونَ الأَبَرُّ الأَكمَلُ
A lament for the noble sons of al-Jubayli,
A lament for my noble priest Antonios
after the passing of Antoun, the most righteous, the most perfect.
Superior and most perfect after Jubaili
هُوَhe كاهِنُthe priest of اللَّهِGod الَّذيwho أَبكىmade weep التُّقَىpiety
هُوَ كاهِنُ اللَّهِ الَّذي أَبكى التُّقَى
أَسَفاًin grief وَناحَand lamented عَلَيهِover him صَدرُthe breast of الهَيكَلِthe sanctuary
أَسَفاً وَناحَ عَلَيهِ صَدرُ الهَيكَلِ
He is God's priest, who made piety weep
He is the priest of God who made piety weep
in grief, and the sanctuary's breast lamented him.
The temple sobbed for him bitterly
قَدindeed باتَhas come to be مُندَرِجاًenfolded بِأَكرَمَin the noblest مَضجَعٍresting place
قَد باتَ مُندَرِجاً بِأَكرَمَ مَضجَعٍ
وَالنَفسُand the soul قَدindeed حَلَّتhas settled بأَكرَمِin the noblest مَنزلِabode
وَالنَفسُ قَد حَلَّت بأَكرَمِ مَنزلِ
He now lies enfolded in the noblest resting place,
He now rests in the most noble grave
and the soul has settled in the noblest abode.
While his soul reached the most noble abode
فَإِذاso when نَظمتَyou compose in verse لِرَمسهِfor his grave التأريخَthe chronogram قُلْsay
فَإِذا نَظمتَ لِرَمسهِ التأريخَ قُلْ
حُزتَyou have won بالرِّضىthrough favor ياO كاهِنَpriest of اللَّهِGod العَلِيthe Most High
حُزتَ بالرِّضى يا كاهِنَ اللَّهِ العَلِي
So, when you compose the chronogram for his grave, say:
So if you compose a chronogram for his burial
You have won through favor, O priest of God Most High.
Be pleased, O exalted priest of God
