سَلامٌa greeting مِنfrom مُحبٍّa lover مُستَهامlove-stricken
سَلامٌ مِن مُحبٍّ مُستَهام
يحدّثُspeaks فيin الهَوىlove العُذريِّchaste عَنهُof him
يحدّثُ في الهَوى العُذريِّ عَنهُ
A greeting from a love-stricken lover,
A greeting from a lover lost in love's haze
that speaks of him in chaste love.
Who speaks of passion though in absent ways
إِذاif أَهدىhe offers لَكُمto you (plural) يَوماًone day سَلاماًa greeting
إِذا أَهدى لَكُم يَوماً سَلاماً
فَلَيسَthen is not سَلامُهُhis greeting بِأَرَقَّany more tender مِنهُthan he is
فَلَيسَ سَلامُهُ بِأَرَقَّ مِنهُ
If one day he offers you a greeting,
If he should send you greetings in a day
then his greeting is no more tender than he is.
His greeting's not more gentle than he
