A grave holds a departed man of the house of al-ʿAwrāʾ,
A noble rider of long ancestry has departed,
who made eyes stream with sorrow at his departure.
leaving eyes flowing with tears as he went away.
ناحَتْlamented عَلَيهِover him العُلَىglory وَالمَكرُماتُand noble deeds كَماjust as
أَبكىmade weep المَحابِرَthe inkwells والأقلامَand the pens وَالصُحُفاand the pages
Glory and noble deeds lamented him, just as
The exalted ones grieved for him, as did
he made the inkwells, pens, and pages weep.
the ink, the pens and the pages.

حَتّىuntil ثَوىcame to rest فيin جِوارِthe presence of اللَّهِGod مُنصَرِفاhaving departed
His lifetime passed in goodness and beneficence,
His days passed in goodness and kindness
until he departed to rest in God's presence.
until he came to rest near God’s side.
فَقُلتُso I said لَمَّاwhen مَضىhe passed away أَرِّخrecord the date لِساحتِهِfor his resting place
فيat جانبِthe side of العَرشِthe Throne روفائيلُRaphael قَدindeed وَقَفاhas stood
So when he passed, I said, 'Mark the date for his resting place:
When he passed away I said: On the side
Raphael has taken his stand beside the Throne.'
of the Throne stands Raphael recording his merits.
