كَالسَيفِ أَغمَدَ في التُرابِ صَقيلا
A grave for generous Nasif, who rests within,
A eulogy for the noble Nasif who passed away
Like a polished sword sheathed in the earth.
Like a polished sword sheathed in the dust
أَبكَىmade weep بَنيthe sons of غَبرِيلَGhabriel دَمعُtears of دَمٍblood كَماjust as
أَبكَى بَني غَبرِيلَ دَمعُ دَمٍ كَما
أَبكىmade weep المَكارِمَthe noble virtues بُكرَةًin the morning وَأَصيلاand in the evening
أَبكى المَكارِمَ بُكرَةً وَأَصيلا
Tears of blood made Ghabriel’s sons weep, just as
The tears of my people of dust flowed like
They made the noble virtues weep morning and evening.
The tears of the generous that flowed morning and evening
قَدindeed زارَvisited ميخائيلُMikhail والدَهُhis father وفِيand in
قَد زارَ ميخائيلُ والدَهُ وفِي
دارِthe abode of السَعادةِbliss باتَhe spent the night مَعَهُwith him نَزيلاas a guest
دارِ السَعادةِ باتَ مَعَهُ نَزيلا
Mikhail has indeed visited his father, and in
Michael visited his father and stayed
The abode of bliss he spent the night with him as a guest.

فَكَتَبَتُso I wrote وَالتاريخُand history لَبَّىresponded قائِلاًsaying
فَكَتَبَتُ وَالتاريخُ لَبَّى قائِلاً
جاوَرتُI dwelt beside فيin الدارينِboth abodes ميخائيلاMikhail
جاوَرتُ في الدارينِ ميخائيلا
So I wrote, and history responded, saying:
