A tomb for Shakir Batlouni—the noble man has come to rest

أَمالَ غُصنَ صِباهُ عاصِفَ النُّوَبِ
Brimming with life, he died before he had passed forty, though
Still verdant, he departed at forty, and already
the tempest of calamities had bent the bough of his youth.
the tempest of misfortunes had bent the bough of his youth.

Piety mourned him after he was gone, and noble deeds as well,
Piety and noble deeds mourned when he was gone, just as
for his loss drew tears from the eyes of wisdom, nobility, and letters.
he made the eyes of wisdom, nobility, and letters weep.

The living embodiment of hope has died from among us, then cried to the one who
He died and left us, his hope still alive, then cried to whoever
weeps for him: “Enough for you; endure with the patience of one seeking reward.”
weeps for him: “Enough; be patient with the patience of one seeking God’s reward.”

And inscribe upon my grave, as its chronogram, this verse:
And write on his grave, to mark its date: “I have spent the night in it;
“I am your guest; intercede for me, O Savior.”
I am your guest; so intercede for me, O Savior.”
