Take refuge in your resolve when a helper is hard to find,
With your resolve, take heart when helpers are few
and let no languor toy with your ambition.
And let not indifference make your purpose limp

And keep an eye awake in adversity's darkness,
My eyes stay awake in the dark of calamities
with a shining moon drawn from its own thought.
With thoughts that are moonlit and clear

Do not entrust affairs to fingers
Do not leave matters to the negligent
to which those affairs do not belong.
For those affairs will belong to others

For your most faithful worker is yourself in whatever
I am more truthful in striving for you
you attempt, and you are best fitted for it.
In what you attempt, for you are most deserving

Affairs may indeed be entrusted to a zealous man,
Matters may be left to the vigilant
but even the zealous may grow weary.
But even the vigilant may grow weary

Complete what you seek by yourself
yourself, with purpose, borrowing no aid.
Upright, not relying on others

The full moons took their radiance from a sun,
The full moons gained the light of the sun
yet the sun did not make the full moons self-sufficient.
Yet with the sun, the full moons couldn't dispense

We don't deny the merit of some people
whose merit among us is renowned:
Among us their excellence is well known

The expert is master in his own home

Sons of my mother, wake from a slumber
My kinsmen, awake from your slumber
so long that the bed itself has wearied.
For the bed has grown weary of its long use

If life passes in sleep,
When life passes in sleep
beds and graves become alike.
Beds and graves become all the same

God save us from a mighty undertaking
God forbid such a grave thing
whose attainment a feeble resolve seeks.
Whose realization would tax the petty

For when an undertaking becomes momentous,
When the matter has grown dangerous
a mighty effort is required to match it.
Perilous efforts must meet it head on

So undertake the task with a sound heart,
So take on the task with a sound heart
whose sincerity is upheld by dauntless resolve.
Backed by resolute, daring determination

Never let whims carry you away,
And never let desires lead you astray
for whoever rides their paths goes astray and stumbles.
For desire's pursuers stumble and fall

Our tongues may confuse us
but what good is that if our inward purpose differs?
When the heart and conscience differ

All birds have wings and feathers
but among them are those that do not fly.
Yet between them are those that cannot fly

Truth between people is a sun
that rises on the horizon of minds.
Rising on the horizon of minds

To the eyes of the wise it's light
and from it light for the eyes of the wise.
To the livers of fools it's fire

And for civilization raise up every edifice
past which the clouds pass as they travel.
Over which the clouds pass as they move

Are we not descendants of those whose fame
the pages and the ages with their memory,
Filled annals and ages of yore?

Let's follow their path and spend an age
with a resolve that never wearies or falters.
With resolve that never wanes or grows old

And not pride ourselves on their ancient glory
for that, to us, is a great disgrace.
For to us that's a disgrace so severe

Shall we build greatness from our progress?
then, once they are attained, our hands lie idle?
If our hands can reach, they will grasp and hold

I see the countries weeping in sorrow
while ruin has swept away its splendor.
For their delight is destroyed by desolation

The cedars in Lebanon moan in grief,
The cedars of Lebanon mourn in lament
and Tyre laments after all that glory.
And ruins mourn the past's expiration

Damascus is destroyed without cease
with none but vultures for inhabitants.
And none live there but the eagles

Baalbek, and there is nothing in it

Events attack it daily
as falcons swoop upon vultures.
As eagles swooped down on prey

It would nearly faint in its zeal

What a terrible, frightening event
that brings grief to the eyes' corners and the breasts!
At which breasts and hearts are distraught

Eyes delighted, but now slumber
burning tears will follow their sleep.
Though tears will follow their rest

Through you and your efforts, glories are built

The shadow of the great state is over us
heralds our attainment of success.
Success heralds our triumphant woes

That is rain over the plain of justice
and that a wall around the garden of learning.
A wall around the garden of knowledge
