    The noble Tripolitans founded for us

    An association for intellect that kindled its beacon.

    A people whose benefactions and resolve vied with one another,

    Until they repelled the onslaught of ignorance's armies.

    From learning's remains, they have renewed its splendor,

    And arrayed the beauties of glory in their finery.

    بِالعلمِ أَرَّخَتها أَحيت نَضارتَها

    Clouds of bounty—record the date—in gardens of guidance;

    With learning—I recorded its date—they revived their freshness.
