Time's calamity has betrayed us by taking you,

So we appealed to tears pouring down.

More healing for burning grief and thirst.

Even were they to flow from the eyelids of clouds.

By my life, weeping is of no avail

Against a loss now counted among dreams.

This is only a custom of the eye corners,

Established by helplessness amid mighty calamities.

Grave is a calamity we flee for another calamity,

And a sickness we treat with another sickness.

Fate—the more useful of the two weapons [against it is]

Patience; despair is the furthest our steps can reach.

Time has its own way with events,

    Of these souls and bodies.

And death, like existence, affords a person no

Choice, nor does it arise from a wish.

A person is born into life by compulsion,

And by compulsion tastes the cup of death.

O swiftly departing one, slow down,

And keep us company, if only with a few words.

And grant the eye a glance of farewell

To you—far beyond reach is any greeting afterward.

Alas for the bearer of your death-news—news most dreadful!

How could he set his tongue flowing with flame?

News that veiled the bright morning in darkness,

And in darkness banished the sweetness of sleep.

Of its earthquake of shuddering and crashing.

No—nor did Egypt and Iraq feel less

Anguish than the breasts of the people of al-Sham.

A mourning in which the virtues spent the night

Weeping with the tears of smiles.

And lamentation among pulpits and the throng,

And among written pages and pens.

O you, may goodness and mercy be yours—whom have you left

Among us to face the mighty calamities?

And to whom have you entrusted prudence and resolve,

And the unraveling and firm settling of affairs?

You were a pillar for us; when it crumbled,

Glory and eminence heralded their collapse.

A zeal like flame, and a resolve

More piercing than the cutting edge of a sword.

Calamities battled you for an age; you were never turned back

Except with their edge left chipped.

This bereavement is the first calamity

In which you have surrendered us to time.

We seek fortitude in your loss, but patience becomes

Water streaming from the [eye sockets].

And we seek consolation for your loss, but there appear

A thousand memories, bearing a thousand bonds of duty.

Would that I knew what a person hopes for in his

World, between his morning and the darkness.

His blood has mingled with death since he came to be,

Which has lodged between his flesh and bones.

We are in a transient abode, where there is

No permanence, nor does it itself endure.

Dwellers in a wilderness swept in turn by the winds

Of separation, in the shade of a tent of thumam grass.

Rather, it is a road we traverse; so choose

For yourself provisions from it for the abiding home.

For, if you wish it so, it is a road to ruin,

And, if you wish it so, it is a road to peace.
