    Stop with me, O camel-driver, and let us greet her hills.

    For there are her tents on the valley's bank.

    She has pitched camp on the western sand-bend, stretching

    her tent-ropes over it without stakes.

    She dwells, yet dwells only upon a journey

    that never ends, between travel by day and by night.

    She moves gently, as the breeze passes at midmorning,

    in a blazing howdah made of rays of light.

    Distance veils her features; and if she draws near,

    she turns coyly away, increasing the thirsty one's burning thirst.

    فالشمس من دونها حلّت بمرصاد

    The gaze steals a glimpse of her past the sun's eye;

    for the sun has taken its post before her, lying in wait,

    until, when the sun slumbers in its night, eyes catch

    a fleeting glimpse of her beauty, now revealed.

    So tell us, our neighbor—may God protect you—

    or rather, our sister since the time of birth:

    We have been cut off; no bond remains between us,

    nor any route for sailor or camel-driver.

    No wall lay between us, yet

    the hands of space have raised barriers to our meeting.

    No flying flash of lightning reaches you,

    nor does a balloon's flight draw near you.

    Our only messengers are lights, resembling

    the fire of the cross appearing above the highlands.

    They bring us a sign from you, then return to you

    with a like sign, between sending and receiving.

    Would that I knew: do you know our place?

    And do you have men versed in observation?

    And have they seen our caravan of light setting out

    through their night, descending and ascending?

    And have they raised for us the like of what

    our forefathers raised for you as worshippers' homage?

    For your lofty temples rear

    their heads on the heights like mighty mountains.

    They saw you as beauty's deity, and were not mistaken:

    for beauty is worshipped by lovers and ascetics.

    Perhaps the earth enjoys this favor among you,

    yet, if you only knew, it is an abode of corruption.

    And perhaps you are free today of its corruptions,

    even if we were created as equals.

    أين المفاسد من أخلاق أولاد

    You are the young maiden, knowing no corruption;

    what has corruption to do with children's character?

    فما اهتدى حاضرٌ منهم ولا باد

    All have strayed and wandered lost in their delusion;

    no townsman or nomad among them has found the way.

    And falsehood's banner now flies high through them,

    while the speaker of truth is accused of heresy.

    Dispute arose over what they do not know

    in its essence, nor have any witnesses' eyes seen it.

    Strife worsened through the generations, and kindled

    enmities for ages among hearts.

    Was your misery not enough for you, children of humankind,

    and that you are most surely bound for death,

    أمست كوقرٍ ثقيل فوق أكتاد

    and the toil of life you endure, when it

    has become like a heavy load upon your shoulders;

    كأنما هو حرباء بأعواد

    and the changing phases of time that buffet you,

    as though it were a chameleon upon twigs;

    لكم كتيار يم حول طرّاد

    and the hostility of fate, pursuing

    you like a sea-current round a swift vessel;

    تزاحمون بأقدام وأعضاد

    and the toil for livelihoods, in pursuit of which

    you jostle with feet and arms;

    and battling illnesses that strike savagely,

    and calamities beyond all counting?

    Why, then, do you aid time, some of you,

    in scheming with it against others—what wicked aid!

    For our earth is an abode of peace for whoever

    seeks peace, and an abode of war for the aggressor.

    All of us upon it are bound to perish; so nothing

    is more misguided, once we have enough, than striving for more.
