رَمسٌa grave بِهِin it مِنfrom آلِthe family of صافيSafi نازِلٌone who rests
رَمسٌ بِهِ مِن آلِ صافي نازِلٌ
كَثُرَتwere abundant لِمصرَعِهِfor his death الدُموعُthe tears الذُّرَّفُfreely flowing
كَثُرَت لِمصرَعِهِ الدُموعُ الذُّرَّفُ
A grave wherein one of the house of Safi rests;
A portrait descending from the family of unblemished virtue,
Abundant were the tears shed for his death.
Abundant tears streamed for his death, flowing and pouring.
رَيّانُfull of vigor وَلَّىdeparted فيin الشَبيبةِyouth راحِلاًjourneying away
رَيّانُ وَلَّى في الشَبيبةِ راحِلاً
عَنّاfrom us وَبُرداهُand his two cloaks تُقىًpiety وَتَعفُفُand self-restraint
عَنّا وَبُرداهُ تُقىً وَتَعفُفُ
Full of vigor, he departed in his youth,
Rayyan turned away in his youth, leaving,
away from us, his two cloaks piety and self-restraint.
Chaste and shielded from us, of utmost modesty.
وَلَقَدand indeed تَمَتَّعَtook pleasure بِالسَعادةِin happiness فائِزاًgaining
وَلَقَد تَمَتَّعَ بِالسَعادةِ فائِزاً
فيهاin it بِحَظِّwith a share of كَرامةٍhonor لاnot يُوصفُcan be described
فيها بِحَظِّ كَرامةٍ لا يُوصفُ
And indeed he enjoyed happiness, gaining
He was privileged with happiness and success,
in it a share of honor beyond description.
Endowed with honor beyond all description.
وَعِبارةُand the wording of التاريخِthe chronogram تَنطقُdeclares أَنَّهُthat he
وَعِبارةُ التاريخِ تَنطقُ أَنَّهُ
بِالبِرِّthrough righteousness قَدindeed نالَattained الكَرامةَhonor يُوسُفُYusuf
بِالبِرِّ قَد نالَ الكَرامةَ يُوسُفُ
And the chronogram's wording declares that
The chronicle of history proclaims,
through righteousness, Yusuf has attained honor.
With righteousness, Yusuf attained greatness.
